Derrick Morgan Jr. is a U.S. trademark attorney and Managing Partner of Morgan Business Solutions, LLC. He represents small businesses, entrepreneurs, startups, and established brands in protecting their trademarks throughout the United States. Derrick has guided and supported more than 3,000 businesses and brands and has served as attorney of record on more than 2,500 trademark matters before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

U.S. Trademark Law Experience

Derrick’s practice focuses on U.S. trademark law, including comprehensive trademark searches and clearance, USPTO trademark applications, trademark prosecution, Office Action responses, Statements of Use, trademark renewals, assignments, enforcement, oppositions and cancellations, and trademark portfolio management.

He regularly advises U.S. and international clients on whether proposed trademarks are available for use and registration, how to navigate potential conflicts with existing brands, and how to develop practical strategies for protecting their intellectual property in the United States.

Derrick’s approach combines legal analysis with the practical realities of building and operating a business. His goal is to identify trademark risks early, provide clients with clear and practical advice, and pursue cost-effective solutions when disputes arise. When conflicts cannot be resolved informally, he advocates for his clients through USPTO proceedings, negotiations, and litigation when appropriate.

His practice spans businesses across a wide range of industries, including technology, software and SaaS, mobile applications, e-commerce, clothing and consumer products, professional services, entertainment, education, and emerging brands.

Professional Experience

Before founding Morgan Business Solutions in Chicago, Derrick practiced as an associate attorney at an Indianapolis law firm, where he also served as associate general counsel for USA Badminton.

Derrick was selected as the 2026 Early Career Alumni Award from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, recognizing his professional achievements and contributions early in his legal career.

His professional background began in sports law and includes experience with the NCAA, USA Track & Field, Indiana Sports Corp, and other organizations. Derrick has also developed litigation experience in federal courts across multiple jurisdictions, including matters in New York, Illinois, and Colorado.

Today, his practice is focused primarily on helping businesses protect valuable brand assets through U.S. trademark registration, prosecution, enforcement, and strategic trademark counseling.

Outside the Office

Outside of his legal career, Derrick enjoys spending quality time with family, friends, and his dog London.

As a former sprinter and former legal representative for Team USA, sports remain an important part of his life. He enjoys traveling internationally to support Team USA at major track meets, cheering on his beloved Indiana Hoosiers and boxing. He is also passionate about contemporary art and enjoys exploring museums, galleries, and local art scenes around the world.

An avid traveler, Derrick has visited more than 65 countries and is working toward his goal of exploring 100.
